GRANITE LAKE ASSOCIATION
Questions and Concerns
Comments and Suggestions
This is a follow up to the 02/04/08 GLVD commissioners meeting objective: to provide info for property owner in the
GLVD about the Dam repairs.
1 On Sept. 15/07 DES conducted an inspection of the GLVD Dam. This inspection was requested
by GLVD because significant voids were discovered in the box culvert.
2 The inspection results caused DES to issue
a Letter of Deficiency report.
This very detailed report lists 14 areas of concern and a time line for the repairs.
A number of the
easier and less costly repairs were completed in December of 07 by the commissioners. However the repair of the Box Culvert
is more complicated.
3 The Box Culvert is the outlet for the Dam and also the support for the roadway that passes over the Box
Culvert.
A letter from NHDOT in Oct.07 listed a concern that the damage behind the wall of the Box Culvert could cause
a road failure. Their recommendation was that the road be closed when there was excessive water leaving the Dam. At that time
the lake was to go through a draw down. The commissioner informed The Town of Nelson of this recommendation and the Road was closed.
One 6" board at a time was remove to minimize the flow over the spillway. When the water level reached the spillway the gate
was opened to drain the mill pond.
The Town of Nelson engaged Engineer Donald Woods to do a Preliminary report of the repairs. The gate was closed after Woods did a inspection
of the Box Culvert. The town of Nelson made a decision to open the road.
On December 19/07 the GLVD commissioners delivered to
the town of Nelson Selectmen a letter requesting that the road remain closed.
4 As of Jan 29/08 there is no accurate cost
for the repair. Mr. Woods is requesting $9000.00 to complete a plan to submit to the NHDES for approval. $4500.00 from Nelson and
$4500.00 from the GLVD. Woods rough estimate for repairs is $50,000.00. Nelson is asking it voters for $29,000.00 to help with the
engineering and repair costs. At this time there is no estimate for the engineering and repair cost to the road way over the box Culvert.

GLA Lake Host program 2008
Once again the GLA plans to participate in the New Hampshire Lakes Association (NHLA) Lake Host
Program. The Lake Host Program is designed to educate people using NH lake waters such as Granite Lake about the aggressive nature
of exotic weeds, such as Milfoil once they invade lake waters. A second purpose of the program is to perform courtesy inspections
of boats entering and leaving Granite Lake at the access ramp in Nelson. A Port-A-Potty has been installed by the town of Nelson,
behind the fire station for the convenience of people using the access boat ramp.
Last year, with the help of Eve Sharkey as
Point Person, numerous volunteers and a few paid students, 426 boats were inspected over a period of 13 weeks. The NHLA issues
grants each year for the Lake Host Program and recipient organizations are expected to match at least 50% of the grant with volunteer
efforts. Last year our grant was $3000, the most GLA had ever received since 2004 when we began to participate in the Lake Host Program.
We matched more than 100% of our grant.
Unfortunately, the NHLA has reduced the grant amounts for this year. The highest grant
is $2500 and the amount participant organizations receive is based on the number of boats inspected last year. Since the GLA inspected
426 boats last year, we have been awarded $2000.
Our Lake Host program has been successful because of the tremendous volunteer
efforts of the Granite Lake community. We are all interested in keeping the lake as pristine as it has been. If you know the day and
time, you might be able to spend some time at the boat landing beginning May 31st, give me a call- 847-9547. You can leave a message
with the day and time you can volunteer and your phone number. Email would work also. anrn210@gmail.com
