GRANITE LAKE ASSOCIATION
Questions and Concerns
Comments and Suggestions
Granite Lake is a spring-fed lake located between the Towns of Nelson
and Stoddard, NH about 15 miles east of Keene, NH.
Granite Lake Association (“GLA”) is a 50+ year-old
NH non-profit association. Its members are mostly homeowners with lake frontage on, or with lake rights to, Granite Lake.
Its funding comes from dues and donations.
GLA owned and operated the dam at the outlet to the lake until
about 1995 when it transferred the dam to the then newly formed Granite Lake Village District (“GLVD”).
GLVD
is a municipal entity formed pursuant to NH RSA Chapter 52 for the sole purpose of “impoundment of water.” Its funding is from
real estate taxes.
GLA regularly provides requests, information and advice to GLVD, which maintains lake levels
and periodically raises and lowers lake levels for dam and lake-shore maintenance.
GLA owns and
supervises the small island at the east end the lake. The island provides a recreational space for boaters and swimmers.
In order to maintain the pristine condition of the island, users are expected to remove their own trash.
One
public boat landing, which is not open for public swimming, is located at the west end of the lake. GLA volunteers and paid
hosts of its Lake Host Program periodically examine boats at the landing to avoid lake infestation by milfoil and other harmful plant
species.
GLA does periodic lake water sampling and testing through its participation in the Volunteer
Lake Association Program (“VLAP”). VLAP is operated by the NH Lakes Association in conjunction with NH Department of Environmental
Services.
